National Recovery Month (Recovery Month), celebrated during the month of September, began in 1989 and evolved to National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month (Recovery Month) in 1998, when the observance expanded to include celebrating the accomplishment of individuals in recovery from substance disorders. Now in its 22nd year, Recovery Month highlights individuals who have reclaimed their lives and are living happy and healthy lives and also honors the treatment and recovery service providers who make recovery possible.

Recovery Month promotes the message that recovery in all its forms is possible and also encourages citizens to take action to help expand and improve the availability of effective recovery services for those in need.

The Narconon Drug Rehabilitation and Prevention program started in 1966 after William Benitez, an inmate in Arizona State, read a copy of “Fundamentals of Thought” by L. Ron Hubbard that had been given to him by a friend. “I had always been an avid reader of books dealing with human behavior. Yet, this small book impressed me more than anything else I had ever read before. I read it over and over and then purchased additional books by Mr. Hubbard and studied them very carefully during the following year, even into the late hours of the night in my cell.” said Benitez.

From its first humble beginnings in the Arizona State Prison where Mr. Benitez deliver the first program on a trial basis to 20 inmates; to the 100 plus active centers Narconon now has around the world, all the programs are founded on the core expectation that stable recovery is possible.

In keeping with National Recovery Month the following words exemplify the sentiments of myriad of letters the Narconon East US Centers receive from parents and the loved ones of those who have stably recovered through the Narconon program. They celebrate not only the girl mentioned who has stably recovered from drug abuse; they also celebrate the dedicated staff who delivered the program to her. "My wife and I are so grateful to the job that the superb people at Narconon Suncoast Rehabilitation Center have done. They have turned around an absolutely destroyed young lady and made a wonderful young woman of her with their structured and tough approach to getting off the junk. Without Narconon, my wife and I would surely have been attending a funeral for our daughter, but because of them and their program, we will hopefully someday be attending her wedding," says M.W.
