A spacecraft approached at only 200 kilometers of the comet Tempel 1, located 336 million kilometers from Earth, NASA informs. The comet has been visited by spacecraft in 2005 too.
Deep Impact was the first NASA mission that sent her to meet with Tempel 1 in 2005. Back then, the ship launched a probe on the comet's surface and, at the impact, it formed a crater. Detached from the comet dust and debris were collected by a probe that has arrived back on Earth in 2007.
