National Cholesterol Education Month: Increasing Awareness about Heart Disease and the Importance of Lipoprotein Testing

September 18, 2010 Medical news in Los Angeles,California, United States of America

National Cholesterol Education Month may increase awareness about the link between cholesterol and heart disease, and educate individuals about the importance of advanced lipoprotein testing.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Los Angeles, California, United States of America (Free-Press-Release.com) September 18, 2010 -- This week, America celebrates National Cholesterol Education Month. With cardiovascular diseases as our nation’s number one killer, including stroke, this celebration gives American’s an opportunity to not only become more aware about how cholesterol effects coronary health, but also educate themselves on how to prevent heart disease and lead healthy lives!

What many people do not know, is that heart disease is not inevitable and can be prevented through exercising, healthy diets, and more importantly, proper detection of high cholesterol levels. In recent years, science and research have strengthened the argument for lipoprotein testing as a means to accurately determine an individual’s risk for coronary heart disease. Primarily, this is based on two simple biological facts: Firstly, low density lipoproteins (LDL) are particles that transport varying amounts of cholesterol (LDL-C) into the artery wall. Secondly, the higher amount of LDL particles (LDL-P), the greater risk for coronary heart disease.

Through various research, including a study conducted by the American Journal of Cardiology in 2002, found that coronary artery disease progression was strongly related to the number of lipoprotein particles. Though science points to advanced lipid testing as a means to detect risk for heart disease, many of the nation’s premiere cardiovascular centers are still not performing such methods of detection. With the availability of new technology, Dr. Richman is able to perform the most thorough and comprehensive cardiovascular screening available within the United States today. At his clinics, he is able to measure cholesterol through not only the traditional method, but also NMR based lipoprotein testing to identify those at risk.

Tragically, many people discover that they are at risk for heart disease at the time of their heart attack; and devastatingly, one in three of those who experience this heart attack will die. By accurately detecting heart disease risk early, through cholesterol education and the advanced and comprehensive methods of lipoprotein testing, imagine how many lives could be spared!

About Dr. Richman's Center for Cholesterol Management

The Center for Cholesterol Management is directed by Michael F. Richman, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.C.C.P, cardio thoracic surgeon and leading expert on cholesterol management and lipoprotein testing. Dr. Richman is a diplomat in the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, a fellow in the American College of Surgeons and a fellow in the American College of Chest Physicians. In 2002-2003, he was listed by the Consumers' Research Council of America in the "Guide to America's Top Surgeons." Dr. Richman is also the national heart health examiner for the Examiner.com and is the cholesterol expert on WebMD.com. He also has been on shows such as Dennis Prager, Daily Buzz, KYMA, WFLA, WZTV and Southern California Life, etc. Dr. Richman is very learned, camera ready and a highly respected surgeon and doctor.

After completing his medical degree at Georgetown University, Dr. Richman moved to his native home of Los Angeles to complete his general surgery residency at the University of Southern California (USC) School of Medicine. He then completed a fellowship in cardiothoracic and vascular surgery at Jackson Memorial Hospital at the University of Miami. Having performed nearly one thousand cardiac bypass procedures throughout his career, Dr. Richman has always maintained a strong interest in the preventative aspect of cardiac care, namely cholesterol (lipid) management. As a long-standing member of the National Lipid Association, Dr. Richman started The Center for Cholesterol Management in August 2005 in order to focus exclusively on preventative care and management for those who may be at risk for heart disease.

The Center for Cholesterol Management is the only free-standing facility in Southern California to deliver state-of-the-art diagnosis and treatment of lipid disorders using advanced lipoprotein testing- the only test that provides both traditional lipids and the number of atherogenic particles to better identify and manage patients at risk for coronary heart disease. He recently added the most comprehensive cardiovascular testing available to identify patients at risk for cardiovascular disease earlier and then individualize the appropriate treatments. Dr. Richman is one of very few heart surgeons with a practice dedicated to advanced lipoprotein testing and the prevention of heart disease. http://www.lipidcenter.com/
