National Medical Association Applauds President Obama’s Deficit Reduction Efforts

September 28, 2011

The NMA has continued to insist that deficit reduction proposals should not impede access to or compromise quality of care.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) September 28, 2011 -- (Silver Spring, Maryland) --- “We applaud President Obama’s efforts at dealing with America’s long-term fiscal challenges even as he deals with the need to solidify the economy in the near term”, remarked Dr. Cedric M. Bright, President of the National Medical Association (NMA), the nation’s premier membership organization for Africa American physicians.

“There are elements of the President’s deficit reduction plan with which we agree. Nationally, we agree with his approach to fixing Medicare’s Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR) problem once and for all. At the state level, we think that his attempt at ensuring increased protection for Medicaid beneficiaries by limiting the taxes Medicaid providers pay to help finance the program may show dividends. We look forward to working with the Administration and the Congress in maximizing the opportunity to improve care, reduce disparities, and improve safety and quality for vulnerable populations that our members serve. It is our hope that these measures will help to reduce costs,” concluded Dr. Bright.

In previous statements, the NMA has advocated for deficit reduction proposals that ensure the strengthening of the health care safety net. The NMA has continued to insist that deficit reduction proposals should not impede access to or compromise quality of care.
