(Free-Press-Release.com) November 10, 2011 --
The World’s rarest diamonds are coloured and these rare coloured gemstones are on par in rarity if not rated to a higher scale, when compared with the most nebulous and obscure diamonds of the world. It is not easy to find a large sized coloured diamond, in fact only one in almost every 10,000 diamond Carats mined is actually distinct enough to be classified as natural fancy coloured, making the finding of a coloured diamond that is large in size and clarity, exceptionally rare to say the least.
A natural fancy coloured diamond is formed under conditions that are truly remarkable. Formed many miles below the surface of the earth, these diamonds are carried in Kimberlite stones during volcanic eruptions to the surface. It is a fact that these natural diamonds are obviously aged and a lot of care is taken so as not to damage or destroy the larger diamonds when they are detracted from the ore. A tiny fraction of the diamond ore has actual genuine diamonds and only twenty per cent of these diamonds that are colourless are quantified to be of ‘gem-quality’ standard. Out of this percentage only one out of ten thousand Carats is a natural coloured diamond equating to almost two per cent of complete global mining.
Colourless Diamonds (also referred to as Clear and/or White) are pure carbon. When another mineral comes in contact with this carbon it produces a hue in the diamond, making the whole process rare. The clarity of the coloured diamond is a huge factor that contributes to its rarity. Inclusions are small and often inconspicuous marks within the diamonds and the more these inclusions are not visible with the naked eye, the price and rarity of the diamond improves due to its clarity.
Size also plays an important role in the rarity of a coloured diamond. A coloured diamond that is 1.00 Carat is worth much more than almost twice its value, even though it is double the size of a diamond that is of 0.5 carat. The reason for this is because the mining of a 1.00 Carat coloured diamond is more difficult than the diamond that is half the size. Large sized coloured diamonds are considered valuable and rare because great care and sensitivity is required during mining to make sure that they are not damaged and extracted in the correct format.
One of the rarest coloured diamonds is the Red. It is believed that approximately 20-30 Red Diamonds are known to be of existence in the world. The “Moussaieff Red” was the largest Red Diamond at 5.11 Carats and was said to be found by a farmer in Brazil.
The “Steinmetz Pink” is known to be the largest and internally flawless Pink Diamond that weighs 59.60 carats. It is said that experts took close to two years to actually extract and cut it correctly. It is therefore no surprise that celebrities and other stars are more than ready to invest in these exquisite and precious rare diamonds.
Blue Diamonds are also considered to be extremely rare and valuable exemplifying hues which emphasise the colour of the deep blue sea or a bright blue sky. Collectors’ and connoisseurs’ prize Orange and Green coloured diamonds as a result that they are so rare that very few actually see these types of diamonds that have pure grading.
Yellow Diamonds are considered to be the ‘most common’ of coloured diamonds but do not let this fool you in to believing they are as common as the title suggests; they are dazzling and popular and still represent a prime investment opportunity. In fact, the rise and growth in the Yellow Diamond prices has been significant as it parallels those of the Pink and Blue as of late. The most famous Yellow Diamond is the Tiffany Diamond that was found in South America. The “Hancock Red Diamond” was sold in 1987 for more than 926,000 USD per Carat in New York at Christie’s. This 0.95 carat coloured diamond was also discovered in Brazil. This rare diamond was the most expensive to be sold at Christie’s for some time. Statistics state that a similar diamond at today’s international market price would fetch in the region of 7 Million USD.
The cut of a coloured gemstone is important as it affects the hue and colour of a diamond. The cut also enhances the colour and makes it richer and darker thus increasing the value and grading of the diamond, typical examples of shapes such as the square, radiant and cushion; yield and intensify the magnificence of the underlying colour.
