SUB: PRESS RELEASE – COMRADE SAMUEL AUGUSTINE, TRADE UNION LEADER PASSES AWAY

Comrade Samuel Augustine, President of this Union, Patron of All India Defence Employees Federation and a veteran Trade Union Leader who was born on 30 Jul 1921 and 89 years old passed away today at 0900 hrs at Raheja Hospital, Mahim, Mumbai. A well known leader of Defence employees, he himself worked as a fitter for years together in the Indian Naval Dockyard, Mumbai during the British regime. He took active part in the freedom struggle, Sanyukhta Maharashtra movement, Goa Liberation Movement and worked for the cause of the working class particularly the Defence Employees. He was also the President of the Greaves Cotton and Allied Companies Employees Union, Mumbai. He was detained in jail for more than ten years throughout his life for the cause of the workers and weaker section of the society. He was a bachelor who had nothing to lose or nothing to shed tears for leaving somebody behind while entering detention jail everytime. Believing in Marxism and throughout life preaching Marxism and fundamentals of Leninism, he was very disciplined in his personal life and in political field for more than 70 years. He was worried that the high values of yester years of devotion, discipline and sacrifice which laid the very foundation of trade union movement have taken a back seat now.

His funeral will be held tomorrow at Shivaji Park, Mumbai at 1700 hrs.
