FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) March 24, 2010 --
Nawras, Oman’s second operator owned by Qatari incumbent Qtel, confirmed plans to offer fixed line services as soon as the second half of 2010 using a combination of fibre optic cable and WiMaX. The operator confirmed that installations are ahead of schedule as it had already installed 1500km of cable and it is currently laying about 10km of cable per day. Nawras, which will be in direct competition with incumbent operator Omantel, said that it will be able to offer broadband services to more than 54% of Oman’s population at launch and will increase this coverage to 81% by mid 2011.
Peter Rubeck, Chief Technical Officer, commented on the project: “For the last five years we have reliably delivered services based on our high quality mobile network and now we will do the same with our fibre optic cable backbone and WiMAX technology powering our pleasingly different fixed services”.
According to Dataxis Intelligence, Nawras had more than 1.8 million subscribers and about 50% market share as of December 2009. The operator became Oman’s second mobile operator in 2005 and won Oman’s second fixed license in November 2008.
