With the filing period for next year’s general election still more than four months out, the race for the District 12 state Senate seat is getting crowded as a third candidate has entered fray.
Daniel Glover of Coats has announced he will run in the Republican Primary for the Senate seat, which is currently held by Sen. David Rouzer. Sen. Rouzer has announced he will not seek re-election next year and will instead run for Congress in North Carolina’s 7th District.
Mr. Glover joins Harnett County Board of Commissioners Chair Tim McNeill and former state Rep. Don Davis of Erwin, who have also announced for the vacated Senate seat.
Mr. Glover grew up in Apex but has lived in Coats since 2005.
He attended the N.C. Tarheel Academy in Sampson County and is a veteran of the United States Army where, having served from 2000 until 2002 before receiving an honorable discharge. He earned a degree in Christian education with a minor in pastoral ministries from Heritage Bible College in 2008.
He started a small business, Trapper Dan’s Wildlife & Pest Control, in 2004 and today has locations in both North and South Carolina. He also operates Exclusive Perceptions marketing and PR where he specializes in Web design and search engine optimization.
Mr. Glover is current president of the Dunn-Erwin Rotary Club and serves in various com
mittees with the Dunn Area Chamber of Commerce. He is an instructor at the Central Carolina Community College Small Business Center in Dunn and is a graduate of Leadership Harnett.
He has a wife, Kellye, and two daughters, Emma and Bella.
Mr. Glover said the main issue he wants to focus on is creating a climate where small business owners will be encouraged to create jobs.
“Small business is the backbone of this state,” he said.
“Right now, North Carolina is suffering when it comes to business. I look at my kids and I worry about their future and what’s going to become of this state.”
He said the state needs people in office who are innovators and can come up with creative ways to bring in more businesses and put people back to work.
He said he will also stand up for education.
“Education is what this state is known for,” he said. “We can’t allow our education to drop down.” He said he believes his experience building a small business and as a civic leader has given him the leadership skills needed to hold state office. He said he approaches leadership as a servant- leader.
“I serve the people that I lead.
I don’t lead with a strong arm,” he said.
Not Your Average Politician
Mr. Glover said he understands in taking on men who have been in the political arena for more than a decade he is the political novice of the group, but he believes his lack of experience as a politician should be seen as a positive.
“I have no pre-set agenda,” he said. “I’m your regular citizen coming off the street.”
He said in talking to people he’s heard that they are tired of old-fashioned, “run of the mill” politics.
“They want to see results.
They want to see creative ideas and that’s what I’m all about,” he said.
Though he is running as a Republican, Mr. Glover said he wants to work with people on both sides to find sensible, common sense approaches to solving the state’s problems.
“Nothing’s getting done in Raleigh and something needs to be done,” he said. “There’s gridlock.
The only way to accomplish things is to work with the other side.”
He said he sees the newly-redistricted District 12, which includes Harnett and Lee counties and a small portion of Johnston County, as a predominantly conservative district and believes with no incumbent running for re-election that now is as good a time as any to run.
“I’ve got just as good a chance as anybody else,” he said.
Mr. Glover said he decided to go ahead and announce to get his name out and start building exposure.
“I think people need to go ahead and know who’s going to be running,” he said.
“I’m just a simple man who sees a problem that somebody needs to stand up and handle,” he said. “I can’t solve all the issues, but I can be a voice for business and a voice for the community, and I have a loud voice.”
