Never too late to learn sales knowledge

If you haven't done so already, sit down with pen or PC, map out your career goals, and include some type of training or enhanced learning program in the mix.

Here are a few things you can think about when performing your career review:

1.Our habits and skills need upgrading constantly. Most people get by on the skills they learned in grade school. To be successful in sales, you will need to constantly re-engineer how you read, write, speak and interact with people. The world is constantly changing. Evaluate your skill set and make the necessary modifications.

2. You need an objective view of your performance. Ask someone who can offer separate observations and perceptions about what you are doing, what your behavior is accomplishing and who has the experience to give you viable alternatives.

3. If your company offers you a training opportunity to upgrade your skills, grab it. If your company has no plans to offer you the opportunity to upgrade your skills, invest in your own skills upgrade program. It's that important.

4. Look for training opportunities that help you develop sustainable communication, negotiation and business skills. Most of what is called sales training is actually product training. It's only as good as far as the next product launch. Sales skills are transferable not just between jobs, but help in your career transitions as well. Check with your manager and see what kinds of options you have available.
