The legal services market in India is highly fragmented with a lack of large law firms due to regulation. This means that often people have to spend significant time and effort in understanding legal costs associated with getting legal advice and / or legal documents executed; with no guarantee of quality in either case. As a result, most of us do not bother with legal documentation within our families or with friends and incredibly a lot of medium and small Indian business are still run on informal understandings with clients, suppliers and employees. This often leads to costly litigation and the lack of quality or formal legal documentation / agreements coupled with a slow justice system often renders Indian courts as an ineffective means of dispute resolution.
