ROSELLE, N.J. – In 1492, Christopher Columbus discovered Haiti, and he was surprised by the beauty of the sight seen; he called it “pearl of the islands.” Five hundred years later, the beauty is still there, but it has been the scene of rampant exploitation, poverty, resistance, and revolt.
In his new book, “500 Years of Exploitation: A Study of Diplomacy and Economics in Haiti,” New Jersey author Lociano Benjamin explores what role fellow Haitian expatriates and the international community can play in this tragic nation's transition from survival to developing country.
Published by Tate Publishing and Enterprises, the book is available through bookstores nationwide, from the publisher at www.tatepublishing.com/bookstore, or by visiting barnesandnoble.com or amazon.com.
Benjamin boarded a plane from Haiti to New York on July 22, 1987, with dreams of success in the career of his choosing. He achieved his first goals – to learn English and find a job to support his family back in Haiti – and went on to earn his bachelor's degree in French from Montclair State University and his master's in Diplomacy and International Relations from Westminster University Diplomatic Academy of London. He won the 1998 bronze medal in poetry from the French Academy of Paris and in 2000 won first prize in poetry from the French Consulate in New York. His other works include “Tears of Love/Les Larmes D'amour” and the soon-to-be-completed novel “Chronique d'un poete au Coeur blesse.”
He currently lives in Roselle, New Jersey, and serves as an Adjunct Professor at Montclair State University and a French teacher in Newark Public Schools. He hopes “500 Years of Exploitation” keeps the spotlight on Haiti and moves society toward solutions for what is not just the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, but the most impoverished in the world.
