New book by authors Kevin Roach and John Gannon reveals John Lennon's school art work, whilst researching for "The Beatles Living In The Eye Of The Hurricane" a new book which covers six hectic months of the Beatles diary between February - July 1964, the authors had unlimited access to all the Beatles school records, which revealed John Lennon's creative side from an early age, whilst a pupil at Quarry Bank School in Liverpool, John would regulary submit his poetry and art work to be included in the school magazine, and some of the finding have been amazing said Kevin Roach.
John later put his work in the Merseybeat Newspaper, during the early 60s and also in his own book, during the filming of the Beatles movie "A Hard Days Night" John's book was published. Kevin Roach explains the story.
on 23rd April 1964, John Lennon was invited to the Dorchester Hotel to attend the Foyle’s Literary Luncheon in his honour, for the publication of his book In His Own Write, which was a collection of drawings and poems, which was released in March, published by Jonathon Cape, the book sold 100.000 copies during its first print.
The introduction for the book was written by Paul McCartney, who explained how he met John at the Woolton Village fete in Liverpool, and how he and John went on to become teenage pals, Paul also goe’s on to say “There are bound to be thickheads who will wonder why some of it doesn’t make sense, and others who will search for hidden meanings”
For John’s friends and family it all made sense, they were used to the way John would express himself in his poetry and art from a young age.
During his school day’s John would write in his own scrap book, even giving his scrap book a title, calling it The Daily Howl and he would show this to his school friends at Quarry Bank High School, his Aunt Mimi who was John’s guardian at this time, told Paul about the time John had a poem in the school magazine about a hermit, Paul mentions this in his introduction for John’s book, which made Paul think of how much of a deep thinker John was with the line that Aunt Mimi remembered from that poem “as breathing is my life, to stop I dare not dare”
The poem in question was published in the Quarry School Magazine Volume X Easter 1957 titled
The Tale of Hermit Fred
The Wandering hermit Fred am I,
With candlestick and bun,
I knit spaghetti apple pie,
And crumbs do I have fun:
I peel the bagpipes for my wife,
And cut all negroes hair
As breathing is my very life,
And stop I do not dare.
This wasn’t the first time John had a piece of work in the school magazine , his first piece was for his art work but not the cartoon type that is in the book “In His Own Write” it was a more serious piece of a young school boy sitting on the steps of the school doors with a copy of a school report book, looking rather fed up and miserable. This piece of art work by the young John Lennon appeared in The Quarry school magazine Volume X Christmas 1956.
This may be a self portrait and shows the way he was thinking of school at that age, it is well reported that John was a troubled teenager and would often find himself in front of the Headteacher .
"The Beatles Living In The Eye Of The Hurricane" published in March 2011 by Liverpool Authors is a limited edition run of 500 copies.
