Scott began his professional gymnastics career competing for the University of Nebraska, where he was part of the team that won five consecutive NCAA titles, four during his tenure. A three-time National champion, Scott made history at the 1987 Pan Am Games by breaking the Pan Am Games all-around record by winning four gold and four silver medals and becoming the first gymnast in Pan Am Games history to win medals on every event. Scott went on to compete and serve as team captain for the US at the 1988 Seoul Olympics and became one of a handful of two-time Olympians in American gymnastics. That same year, he was one of ten amateur athletes nominated for the prestigious James E. Sullivan award.
