Toxicology in Vitro, the Official Journal of the European Society of Toxicology in Vitro, published a study in their February 2012 issue that presents evidence of anti-cancer properties of glucosamine hydrochloride (glucosamine-HCl) in human oral cancer cells.
Studies have provided evidence of the cancer-fighting properties of glucosamine in cancers such as prostate, breast, lung and leukemia. No studies to date have shown the effects in human oral cancer cells.
The study examined anti-proliferative, growth suppressive and pro-apoptotic effects of glucosamine-HCl on YD-8 human oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) cells. The YD-8 cells were grown in a humidified condition at a constant temperature in a laboratory. Some of the cells were treated with Glucosamine-HCl while others were not.
The results show that glucosamine-HCl has strong anti-proliferative, anti-survival, and pro-apoptotic effects on the cancerous human oral cells. The data also shows the ability of glucosamine-HCl to additionally repress expression of HIF-1⍺, a transcription factor that induces the formation of new blood vessels, especially those that supply oxygen and nutrients to cancerous tissues.
The study claims that its findings suggest that glucosamine-HCl may be eventually used as an anti-cancer agent against human OSCC cells. More studies need to be conducted, including studies with actual human subjects.
