New Hailsham In Bloom Competition For Wildlife-Conscious Gardeners
The search is on for Hailsham’s best wildlife garden!
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) March 4, 2010 --
The Best Wildlife Garden competition, organised by the town council’s Hailsham In Bloom sub-committee, is open to residents in Hailsham with wildlife-friendly front or back gardens. Gardens will be assessed on the following criteria:
• Good planning and design that attracts, enhances and protects wildlife (insects, birds and small mammals)
• Good use of wildlife-friendly habitats, e.g. ponds, hedges, flower borders, small wildlife meadows, compost heaps
• Innovative design that reduces environmental impact
• Use of natural and sustainable (organic) materials
The closing date for all entrants is Saturday 12th June 2010. Entry forms can be downloaded at hailshaminbloom.org and are available to collect at the Town Council Offices, Inglenook, Market Street. Entry into the competition is free.
Judges will visit their preferred destinations and announce the winners shortly after the closing date. A presentation will be held in September (date to be confirmed), where awards will be allocated to entrants who have been chosen as 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize winners.
Cllr Jeff Bentley-Astor, Deputy Mayor and chairman of Hailsham In Bloom said “Gardening for wildlife has gained much credibility and popularity amongst gardeners in recent years, and our new Best Wildlife Garden competition is an opportunity for local residents to showcase their wildlife oasis to competition judges this summer.”
Janet Simes, local naturalist and fellow committee member commented “By providing suitable plants for insects and insect larvae, as well as installing bird boxes and bird feeders in our gardens, we can all do our bit for local wildlife conservation and increased biodiversity levels. Providing adequate food and shelter for our native wildlife is crucial and it offers us, as the observers, great fun into the bargain!”
