New Hope for Identifying Cervical Cancer

Lagos State, Nigeria, has been chosen as the area for this evaluation. Traditional cervical cancer screening could take days to return results costing women valuable time. This “screen and treat” method could possibly make identifying and treating new cases much easier.

Research has proven that such prevention strategies employed in traditionally low-resource settings work best, in both success and cost-effectiveness, when fewer visits are required, especially those that use such a single-visit method (Goldie SJet et al., 2005). Delta Women has teamed up with a trained provider who will be able to not only identify the presence of precancerous and cancerous tissue, but will be able to offer same day treatment for premalignant lesions.
The same-day cryotherapy can be a boon for women who would otherwise face lengthy waits for treatment at other facilities. The acetic acid wash (VIA) is a simple white vinegar wash that is as effective as many other solutions but without the costs. Those who test positive for cancerous lesions will be sent to referral facilities for follow-up evaluations and treatment.
