The two main approaches currently used for hydrogen production each have their own drawbacks. The first, separating hydrogen from natural gas, is too large scale for use in automotive applications, and generates significant carbon emissions. The second, electrolysis, which uses electricity to break water into hydrogen and oxygen, is very expensive, though can be carbon neutral depending on the energy source used. Many researchers have tried to lower the costs of electrolysis; for example by using solar rays instead of electricity, or using various catalysts and additives, though these technologies remain unproven. Despite several decades of research costing billions of government and private dollars, reducing the price of distributed hydrogen production from $4 per kilogram has been an elusive target.

Quantum Ingenuity’s technological breakthrough could change the economics of hydrogen production globally. Company researchers invented an original method of hydrogen production from sources as diverse as vegetable oil and existing transportation fuels directly.
