New Jersey elementary schools have been forced to make major cuts in recent years, cutting essential elective programs such as foreign language education. For Agnes Beede of Chester, New Jersey these cuts hit too close to home.
Beede moved from Costa Rica to the U.S. in 1990 with no knowledge of the English language. She was unable to communicate with others even in the most basic situations.
“If you are not exposed to any other culture and language but yours, going to another country can be painful and frustrating,” Beede said.
Since moving to the U.S. more than 20 years ago, Beede has learned English, but will always remember the barriers she faced when first arriving to the states. She values the importance of knowing at least one other language, and wants others to understand the importance, as well.
All six of Beede’s children know at least two languages. Vanessa, Beede’s 8-year-old daughter, a second grader at Dickerson Elementary School, had her Spanish class eliminated last year due to budget cuts. Frustrated with cutbacks in New Jersey elementary schools, Beede looked for alternate ways to supplement the lack of language education in her daughter’s school and came across Lango, a foreign language education program for kids. Beede finalized a licensee agreement with Lango in 2010 and is now the owner of Lango Northwest New Jersey, offering foreign language classes for kids in local elementary schools and libraries.
Lango classes are offered across the U.S. through similar licensee agreements and offer French, Spanish and Mandarin to kids ages 18 months to 11 years old using a proprietary Adventure Learning teaching method. Lango Northwest New Jersey has five teachers total, all of whom completed a training program focusing on Lango’s teaching curriculum and Adventure Learning method, which focuses on movement, playacting, art and basic conversation. Lango Northwest New Jersey currently offers classes in French, Spanish and Mandarin for ages 2 to 13.
“In every class, we make sure we capture every child’s mind,” Beede said. “We provide a structured and fun program, allowing them to learn in a way that is comfortable and compatible with their age.”
The curriculum is designed specifically for kids, incorporating songs, games and storytelling. Each weekly 45-minute class teaches a few new words and incorporates cultural elements such as ethnic foods and fashions from France, China and Spanish-speaking countries.
“This program is changing my life, and the lives of the children in our area,” Beede said. “Lango gives children and families options to capitalize on an increasing demand for children to learn a new language to prepare for their future in our hyper-competitive global economy.”
