And former sales woman Joanne Browne is even hoping her new venture Bedlington Flooring will be a boost for her out-of-work partner Kevin Oldham, a carpet fitter.

Joanne, from Bedlington, has opened her 1,600ft carpet showroom in prime retail space on Front Street West with the help of business support organisation Go Wansbeck.

Bedlington Carpets hopes to meet the need for affordable low to mid-range carpets in Bedlington, where there is still a buoyant house building and rented sector.

“I’ve been in sales ever since I left school, often working very long hours in a full time role. I recently had a new baby and been made redundant so I thought now is the time to do something for me. The new shop gives me more control over my hours. It will be hard work, but I’m doing it for my family,” she said.

Go Wansbeck business coach Shirley Wilson provided vital support writing a business plan, advising on cash flow predictions and marketing. Meanwhile Go Wansbeck’s commercial property expert Luke Dunnett helped with finding the right location and negotiating on rents.

“This is a really sound business idea. Joanne is a capable lady, with a good sales background who has excellent customer service experience and has researched her potential market well,” said Shirley. “There is a need in Bedlington for an affordable carpet shop where price is not a barrier to quality. With Kevin’s expertise as a carpet fitter as well, there’s no need for people to go out of town any more. I think she’ll do really well and I’ll be there to help her every step of the way.”
