FUT method of Follicular unit extraction, or FUE (individual grafts which are removed and harvested, as opposed to the strip FUT method), continues to have new devices developed for enhancing the quality of this type of procedure. There have been several motorized devices, and one robotic device, that has the ability to score, make punch biopsies, and then harvest follicular units. These devices have added quality and time saving convenience for the FUE method of transplantation, there is yet to be a device to extract punched grafts.
Parsa Mohebi M.D., the medical director of US Hair Restoration, sees this as an opportunity for developing proper research to discover new ways of enhancing the FUE transplant method of hair transplantation. He foresees the next level in the development of FUE devices, is a machine that can punch, harvest, and implant follicular unit grafts in a short period of time. When this is accomplished the time needed for the FUE procedure will be significantly reduced, as well as the number of grafts able to be transplanted in one procedure will be increased. This will result in saving time and in a more economical benefit to both the transplant patient and surgeon.
“In order for hair restoration surgeons to assess how long a follicular unit graft can remain in a person’s scalp before an extraction, understanding the optimal time duration is necessary before the graft can be removed. This is the basic reason for the research.” Said Dr. Mohebi who continued, “This has never been done in the past and now for the first time at US Hair Restoration, we are trying to accomplish this study and help other hair transplant surgeons and the entire hair restoration industry, move to a new level of quality and understanding. Through this, we will ultimately help to design the newest technique and device for extracting follicular units.”
