New trends in contemporary publishing of the twenty-first century. Open to Interpretation books represent cross section of collaborative art.

ST. PAUL, Minnesota “ Open to Interpretation books are twenty-first century art”using the Internet and social media to create community, conversation, and a new artistic experience in a unique series of books. The project brings together communities of photographers and writers worldwide to enhance each other's work.

The book series from Taylor & O'Neill pairs juried photographic images with poetry and prose interpretations of the images. Each book begins with a themed call for photographs. The selected images become the literary inspiration for the writers' submissions, from which two are chosen to accompany each image. The subsequent pairing of photographs and written pieces, culminates in the publication of a high-quality, fine art book.

Technology is transforming every aspect of our lives. Publisher, Clare O'Neill recognized the use of today's technologies to reach out to photographers and writers. It's only in this digital era that this project could reach thousands of people and contributors could collaborate on a fine art book project yet have no interaction outside of the work they produced. For the second book nearly 700 participants, from 12 different countries and 45 states, submitted their work for consideration.

"Open to Interpretation addresses both the human impulse to create art, as well as the urge to try to define or make sense of the work created," said Clare O'Neill, publisher of the Open to Interpretation series. "The pairings of the photographs with the written interpretations offer the reader different points of entry to each image, opening a dialogue between artist and writer, image and audience.

As paper and ink publishing is struggling coffee table art books continue to thrive. E-readers may have transformed the way we read but dematerialize in the digital space. Nothing compares to a fine art book as object of art. Color, level of detail, beautiful paper, sturdy binding”ipad and kindle can't compete against the simple artistry of really well done coffee table books.
