"One man's trash is another man's treasure" is a saying we've all heard, but few people know how to do that successfully. Homeschool mom, Susan Whitehead, is no stranger to the concept and has been doing just that working from home. In fact, she has been selling on the world's most popular auction site, eBay.com, since 1998 and turned lots of her family "trash" into treasure, in the form of cash.
Recently, she held an online "bootcamp" to teach other homeschool families how to run an auction business. Now she will be making the recordings available in her new course, Auction Business 101.
"A home-based business is a natural outflow of home education," Whitehead said, who is also known as Mrs. Homeschool by her Facebook and blog fans. "And one of the easiest and fastest ways to get a business going is to turn to the internet."
But not just any internet business, she said. The Whitehead family has several online businesses, but the one they recommend to folks just starting out is by selling their unwanted items on eBay.
eBay is currently the 8th most popular website in the United States according to web traffic analysis site Alexa.com. With over 80 million users, Whitehead said it only makes sense to try to sell items where the pool of buyers are.
"I hear from so many people who have spent hundreds, or even thousands of dollars, trying desperately to find a way to leverage the internet and make money, but very few succeed." She said she gets emails from readers on a regular basis asking what they can sell online and how to have a business from home. And her answer? Start on eBay.com.
But not everyone knows the ins and outs of selling on eBay. Whitehead was constantly being asked by friends and family how she sells items on eBay, so she decided to create a course that would show them how she does what she does.
"I can take almost anyone, with a little drive and determination, from total eBay 'newbie' to a seller making profits in just a few days." Her course covers everything from how to research items before listing them to make sure they sell to how the shipping process can be streamlined to avoid some of the headaches inexperienced eBayers have when starting out.
She said that selling on eBay isn't difficult, but there is a learning curve. "Like most people starting out on eBay, I've lost more money than I care to think about. But I've learned from my mistakes and now I don't list anything unless I know a ball park figure of what I'll get when it sells."
Whitehead enjoys sharing her knowledge of eBay with others because she knows the impact it has had on her own family. She said her hope is that her course will not only help others make some money online, but also help them get rid of clutter, show their kids how to run an online business and get the confidence they need to create more businesses.
Her course, Auction Business 101, will be released at noon on October 19, 2010. For more information, go to www.AuctionBusiness101.com
