Aikido Northside is now open inside the spacious Gym Quest Facility located at 3004-B Impala Place, Richmond, VA, 23228 on Richmond’s northside near the intersection of Staples Mill Rd. and Glenside Drive. Aikido is a traditional Japanese budo teaching both martial principles and concepts for self improvement. Aikido also happens to be a great activity for the mind and body. Aikido Northside provides a supportive, positive environment for learning this traditional martial art. Small classes provide for excellent instructor to student ratios and the ability to work at your own pace.
Suenaka-Ha style Aikido is an effective martial art for self-defense, it also offers a positive philosophy that includes the concept of unification of mind and body. Many of the things you learn on the mat will also enhance activities in your daily life. The techniques of Aikido include a focus on taking your opponents balance and controlling him by using his own energy against him. This approach provides a very powerful means of defending yourself without the requirement for great physical strength. The combination of movement, striking, wrist locks, throws and extension of energy provides the tools needed for successful self-defense. The Ki Development methods promote unification of mind and body which has many benefits to our daily lives beyond the execution of aikido techniques.
Aikido Northside is fortunate to benefit directly from the founder of Wadokai Aikido Roy Yukio Suenaka Sensei, one of contemporary martial arts most experienced practitioners and best-kept secrets. Through direct communication, training camps and seminars, Sensei Suenaka is active in all of the affiliate dojos. Dedicated to the personal development of his students instead of commercial success, Sensei Suenaka has created a national organization of passionate and skilled aikido instructors and practitioners.
Aikido Northside’s Chief Instructor James Golden brings 20 years of Aikido experience to this new dojo. Sensei Golden holds a black belt in Suenaka-Ha Tetsugaku-Ho Aikido as well as a black belt in Shin Shin Toitsu Aikido. He is ranked Jokyu in Ki Development (Unification of Mind and Body) and has considerable experience in the study of Tae Kwon Do, Tai Chi and Karate Jutsu. Assistant Instructor Christine Golden is one of the most dynamic women in the Wadokai organization and one of the only female black belt instructors in Richmond. Sensei Christine’s nickname is “Tokan” which means “fighting spirit” and she proves that on the aikido mat and on the playing field as VCU Woman’s Rugby team starting fullback.
This father daughter team are both as patient as they are skilled making them excellent instructors to anyone that desires to learn such a dynamic martial art as aikido. We welcome you to visit our dojo and our website to learn more about this wonderful opportunity to study a traditional martial art, learn practical self-defense and effective methods of self improvement in a self paced and friendly atmosphere at http://www.aikidonorthside.com.
