Economists are predicting worldwide GDP to grow by around 3 and a half percent next year, which is a downward adjustment from previous, more optimistic estimates. "In an international climate where growth is inching forward slower than previously expected, one has to be careful in choosing the correct commodities in which to invest," Global Partners Securities analyst Paul Calloway explained.
"Gold, silver and select base metals still have a great deal of upside in this environment. Other commodities, including energy, are considerably harder to predict. The defensive nature of gold, and to a lesser degree, silver, will serve to stimulate increased investment demand as investors look for safe havens in a period of risk aversion, and probably inflation on the back of the US jobs data and EU summit.”
Livestock has also been steady in previous recessions, indicated Calloway, adding that grains also tend to outpace more economically sensitive commodities as base feed demand is generally significantly less sensitive to changes in GDP than are other commodities. Some soft commodities are more cyclical and tend to sell off sharply during global downturns. Energy tends to be at the most risk going into a recession, as its demand is tightly linked with GDP growth.
"Of course, a fair amount of this depends upon the results of that European summit. But most analysts agree that some sort of agreement will, indeed, be reached. Under that assumption, we felt it prudent to increase our holdings in both gold and silver," concluded Calloway.
