Newcastle United Cup Winner Warms Up Tyneside

October 4, 2009

Staying warm over the winter period is very important. There is no excuse not to as many of the services offered by Warm Zone are free of charge.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) October 4, 2009 -- The last Newcastle United Captain to hold major silverware aloft for the club has given a glowing recommendation of the energy saving work carried out in the Borough by Gateshead Warm Zone.

Ex footballer Bob Moncur was the guest of honour at the launch of the Looking Forward Festival and AGM of the Gateshead Older People’s Assembly at Felling Social Club. Almost 300 people packed into the venue where local organisations were available to offer help and advice on everything from community policing to health matters.

Staff from Gateshead Warm Zone, were also on hand to reinforce to the Borough’s older residents the importance of staying warm during the winter months. The advice is to prepare for winter by making homes more heat efficient and taking advantage of an initiative to supply free cavity wall insulation. Older and often more vulnerable residents can be reassured that winter doesn’t have to be a cold and frightening time.

Gateshead Council’s Cabinet Member and Wardley and Leam Lane Councillor, Peter Mole MBE met with John Leslie from Warm Zone and Bob Moncur at the event. They learnt that in the past three years, Gateshead Warm Zone has insulated 20,000 homes, completed 50,000 home energy assessments and reduced CO2 emissions by around 13,000 tonnes per year. In addition, they also helped Gateshead residents claim £2.6 million in benefit entitlements. Councillor Mole who is also the Council’s Champion for Older People was very impressed at Gateshead Warm Zone’s record, especially as the majority of the work is free within the Borough.

Fairs Cup Winner Bob Moncur was also keen to praise the Warm Zone team’s winning achievements. “When I was a footballer I had to warm up before a match,” he said.
“Now as I’m getting a bit older, I know how important it is to keep warm during the winter. People say you get nothing for nothing these days but Warm Zones really do make a real difference for free. I’m only playing at home these days and I want it to stay as warm as possible.”

Warm Zones Director David Connor is delighted that they are able to offer everyone within Gateshead, Newcastle, and South Tyneside cavity wall insulation free of charge, irrespective of their household income.

“We’ve already made a real difference to thousands of people in Gateshead, but there are many more that can take advantage of our free services,” said Mr. Connor. “We are able to offer free cavity wall insulation to all homes and in some cases people may also qualify for free loft insulation, which can save hundreds of pounds on fuel bills every year.”

As winter fast approaches and as the dark nights creep in, Councillor Mole and Gateshead Warm Zone have also reminded people not to open their doors to strangers without first checking their identification. All Warm Zone assessors wear red uniforms and carry identification cards. If any one is unsure about the identity of someone claiming to be from Warm Zone, they should ring their office on 0191 4771919.
