Newly Engineered “Mimic” Nanoparticles to Aid Cancer Treatment Say Researchers at Nano Med Tech
Nanoparticles “impersonating” red blood cells will be able to fool the immune system and deliver their payload of cancer-disolving drugs directly to a tumor, say researchers at Shanghai’s Nano Med Tec
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) January 18, 2012 --
The researchers, led by Dr. Xiao Yan Fat, say that they have developed a method that of taking the membrane off of a red blood cell and wrapping it like a disguise around a biodegradable nanoparticle packing with a specific dose of molecular drugs. The ability to deliver multiple drugs in a single nanoparticle is vital because, as Dr. Fat stressed, “Cancerous cells tend to rapidly grow a resistance to drugs that are delivered to the area one at a time.”
“Red blood cells are able to circulate around the body for approximately six months. This will allow these disguised nanparticles to do the same, all the while delivering measured dosages to particularly targeted areas. The immune system will not even know that a foreign body is about, and thus will never attack. To say that this kind of medicinal delivery system is a leap forward, could almost be considered an understatement,” the doctor concluded.
