Newt Gingrich's pro-amnesty remarks in the last GOP presidential debate were a calculated risk, which could start his decline in the polls.

While most Republicans respect the former speaker of the House, he, unfortunately, has been weak on immigration enforcement. He voted for the 1986 blanket amnesty, which was a dismal failure and encouraged more illegal immigrants.
E-Verify was passed against the speaker's wishes, but he was able to prevent it from becoming mandatory. Instead it is entirely voluntary today, which means it is still easy for most illegal aliens to obtain jobs in our country. If the former speaker had supported the bipartisan commission's recommendations, we would not have many of the problems our federal and state governments currently face.
Because we failed to solve the immigration problem in the 1990s we have spent hundreds of billions of dollars over the last 15 years to support illegal immigrants

The Federation for American Immigration Reform estimates that California's state government spends more than $21 billion a year on illegal immigrants
Numbers USA is the nation's largest organization dealing with immigration (over a million members). They have given every candidate an "immigration grade" based on their positions dealing with the subject. Regrettably for Newt Gingrich, his "D-" is not much better than the lowest grade given, which is President Obama's "F-."

Today, Democrats credit Clinton for a good economy, welfare reform and a balanced budget. Yet it is clear that these are all directly related to the "Contract with America" that Gingrich authored, promised and honored his campaign promises. Since Democrats want the Clinton years back, the best way to do that is to elect Gingrich.
Then there are the flip-flops starting with his position on health care and mandates and calling Rep. Paul Ryan's budget "right-wing, social engineering." And just recently, after it was revealed that he was paid $1.6 million by Freddie Mac to lobby for them, even conservative pundit George Will called Gingrich the "classic, rental politician" for trading his influence for money
