After years of research and proposals, New York’s “Taxi of Tomorrow” search has come to an end. New York City’s Mayor Bloomberg recently announced that Nissan won the 10-year, $1-billion contract to provide thousands of taxis to New York City beginning in roughly two years. With over 13,000 taxis on the roads of the city's five boroughs, this was a significant victory for Nissan. The brand beat out both Ford and a Turkish automaker to secure their position as the future taxi provider in the city and to fulfill the contract Nissan plans to replace the city's cab fleet with the Nissan NV. Nissan will continue to replace taxis as needed, which can average around 2,600 vehicles a year.
Bloomberg said that that the NV 200 will be "the safest, most comfortable and most convenient cab the city has ever had” and we can’t help but agree. With the Nissan NV, New York passengers will have access to amenities such as a transparent roof panel and a mobile charging station. The NV 200s will first hit the street in late 2013, with a manufacturer suggested retail price around $29,000 per vehicle.
