(Reno, NV, August 27, 2009) The Nevada Interpreters and Translators Association (NITA) is pleased to announce that Margarita Griggs, a NITA member and English->Spanish translator, has won the top award of the American Translator Association’s (ATA) annual School Outreach Contest. The award is given to a professional linguist who visits a school (elementary school through university) and gives a presentation about translation, interpretation, bilingualism, or a related matter, with the goal of informing children and young adults about and interesting them in the profession. Ms. Griggs is a translator with the Washoe County School District in Nevada and also teaches a translation course at a local community college.

Karen Tkaczyk, NITA’s president, said: “We are thrilled that one of our own members has won this prestigious award. One of NITA’s goals is promoting translation and interpreting in our state, and we are very proud to have Margarita Griggs as a member of our small, but growing organization. She is testament to the fact that great things can be accomplished in Nevada.”

Margarita gave a popular presentation on translation to ESL (English as a second language) high school students at Reed High School in Reno, Nevada. Her presentation, “The Importance of Translation in the World”, focused on the history of world communication through the centuries and on how translators need to be professionally trained to be able to tackle the challenges of the profession. Ms. Griggs wins free registration to this year’s American Translators Association annual conference to be held in New York City from October 28 -31, 2009. She plans to attend along with several other NITA members, including two board members.

The ATA’s School Outreach contest for 2009 – 2010 is already open to members of the ATA and ATA-affiliated groups (which includes NITA). The prize is free registration for next year’s conference, which will be held in Denver, Colorado, from October 27 – 30, 2010.
