Running a small or midsize business is no small job -- between tracking the effectiveness of your sales efforts, monitoring inventory, juggling receivables against payables, and reducing inefficiencies. Wouldn’t it be nice if all the information you needed was pulled together so you could make decisions based on all the interconnected data?
If you want to be able to analyze data, spot meaningful trends, and make those trends actionable, then you need data software that can collect and analyze information, and collaboration software to get that information into the hands of your employees.
Whether you realize it or not, you probably already have all the software that is the foundation of business intelligence. If you have Microsoft Office, Microsoft SQL Server, and Office SharePoint Server, you are well on your way. (By the way, Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express is free!) The key is using that software at its maximum potential.
Once you know which reports you need, and which data points you need to create those reports, the next step is to review the data reporting process and make sure all gaps are filled. Then you need to figure out how to share those reports – publishing to your company’s intranet portal might be the best solution – and automate the process.
The technology behind this process will involve a database to store information, which Microsoft SQL Server 2008 provides. Then, employees can use Microsoft Office programs like Excel to create reports and basic data visualization, and Microsoft Office SharePoint 2007 to share the information.
