In order to build animal shelters, environment ministry tells the mayor after bowing to pressure from Naturewatch in UK. After huge pressure from the Western animal protection, Ukraine bowed. Before the Euro 2012 football championship, killing of stray dogs need to be stopped.
The Environment ministry stated that it had been requesting all the mayors of Ukraine to build animal shelters. During the last year, thousands of stray dogs were killed in Ukraine. In order to clear the streets, these dogs are often poisoned or injected using illegal substances.
While addressing a cabinet meeting, Environment Minister, Mykola Zlochevsky said, “Today I am publicly turning to all city mayors – let us stop the deaths of those poor stray animals for half a year and build shelters together.”
A meeting with the representatives of Naturewatch follows this statement. The head of Naturewatch, John Ruane said, “This is a fantastic victory for Ukraine, its citizens and its animals.” Method of the enforcement of ban is still unclear as Ukraine has huge stray dog population.
