Non-Military, Sensor-Dense Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGVs) to Dwarf Military UGV Market

June 29, 2011 Robotics news in Colorado Springs,Colorado, United States of America

Non-military UGV applications will dwarf the military market or UGV sensors and payloads which is now almost solely responsible for advancing the state of the art in unmanned ground vehicle robotics.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Colorado Springs, Colorado, United States of America (Free-Press-Release.com) June 29, 2011 --

Advancing sensor and payload capabilities in military funded UGVs responsible for saving lives in war zone IED and EOD missions are finding their way in to new military missions as well as non-military applications. Eventually these and other non-military UGV applications will dwarf the military market or UGV sensors and payloads which is now almost solely responsible for advancing the state of the art in unmanned ground vehicle robotics. This is one of the conclusions of a new market and technology forecast report by Market Intel Group LLC (MiG), titled: Global Mobile Defense, Rescue & Security Robots – Sensors & Payloads – Markets & Technologies Outlook 2012-2017.
In the non-military UGV sector, border and perimeter security needs and man-made and natural disasters are the prime market drivers with sensor rich payloads and advanced robotic arm and manipulators bringing autonomous navigation and effector manipulation within reach.

During the recent crisis in the Fukushima nuclear power plant, Japan, a center of excellence in industrial robotics, was forced to import Western UGVs to investigate and make damage assessments at Fukushima. The publicity over Japan's failure to do adequate nuclear power industry contingency planning, including the use of mobile radiation hardened robots, cannot in any good conscience be neglected by the nuclear power industry, the robotics industry or national governing and regulatory bodies.
Lessons learned from the use of rescue robots in the Haiti, Chile, and New Zealand earth quake and mining disasters are being applied to advancing the state of the art and capabilities of a small but extremely important sector of the UGV industry. Rescue robots, machines used to aid in finding and rescuing the victims of calamities where the environment is either unsafe or inaccessible for human first responders are steadily improving their capabilities and proving their value in each new deployment.

Advances in the electronics, integration and software of UGV sensors and payloads are steadily bringing the required autonomous navigation and effector manipulation within reach. But the road to full autonomy is also strewn with hurdles and uncertainty including complex and fragile electronics supply chains, integration and software engineering manpower shortages and threatened military budgets.

The new report covers (among others):
• Market and Technology Forecasts (by Technologies, Markets, Regions)
• Business Opportunities
• Operational Concepts
• Military, Law Enforcement and First Responder and Rescue Robot Needs and Technology gaps
• Supply Chain Issues and Vulnerabilities
• Global Markets and Technologies Forecasts (by region)
• Sensors (Imaging, Effectors, Other Sensors)
• Global Demands by Region and Country
• Future Civil Applications

• Innovative vendors and Selected Regional Consortia, R&D Institutions and Advocacy Organizations
