Non-Profit Donates $10,000 to Cancer Research Charities

L.A. Unico Donates $10,000.00 for Cancer Research

The Los Angeles chapter of Unico National, the largest Italian-American service organization in the U.S., recently donated $10,000 in the fight to defeat cancer.

Club President Germain DeMartinis presented a check for $5,000 in the name of deceased club member Frank Milo to Unico National President Andre DiMino on Jan. 16th during the Unico Western Regional meeting in Long Beach. The money will be forwarded to the Jimmy V Foundation. The Jimmy V Foundation was started in 1993 by ESPN and the late Jim Valvano, an Italian-American basketball coach who worked at North Carolina State University.

“We have fun in our group but, service is why we're a part of Unico National. All of our members appreciate the opportunity to give back to the community.“ DeMartinis said.

The Los Angeles chapter of Unico donated another $5,000 at its January membership meeting on Jan. 20th to City of Hope in the name of Nick Constantini, a deceased member of the club. Constantini’s widow Janie presented the check to City of Hope representative Sharon Joyce.

The Los Angeles chapter of Unico National holds monthly membership dinner meetings in Los Angeles and is identified by the motto "Service Above Self". The club puts on Italian festivals and holds social fundraisers throughout the year.
