FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) February 4, 2011 -- Are we witnessing the death of Christian denominations in America? Studies by Christian and secular organizations indicate that we are. Fewer American Christians, especially Protestants, strongly identify with a particular religious community, Methodist, Baptist, Presbyterian, Pentecostal, etc. According to the Baylor Religion Survey, non-denominational churches are now the second group 'Protestant churches in America, and they are also the fastest growing.

Christians increasingly choose a church not on the basis of its name, but based on more practical issues. Is it easy to find the nursery? I like this music? Are there support groups for people struggling with addiction?

This trend is a natural extension of the American evangelical experience. After all, evangelism is the fundamental message of Christianity, the Gospel, the Gospel, literally "good news"of the kingdom of God in Jesus Christ comes, not on the building name.

The post-WWII generation of evangelicals has been to respond to congregations filled with what they saw as spiritual death. The people belonged to a church, but they did not seem to have the emotional experience of Christianity within the building. Revivalists looked like denominational bureaucracies have grown, and past churches sending missionaries to preach throughout the world to produce white papers on issues such as energy policy.

Renewal wanted to return to basics, to recover the centrality of a personal relationship with Jesus. "Being a member of a church does not make you a Christian," the evangelical pulpit ubiquitous cliche went, nor live in a garage makes you a car. "Thus, these evangelical ministries tend not to talk about these issues that could divide the faithful. They have avoided such questions as: Who should be baptized, and when? What is the Lord's Supper means? Women should be ordered? And so on.

The movement exploded. Before 1955, there were virtually no Megachurch (defined as 2,000 people per worship service) in the country. Now there are between 850 and 1,200 churches and many of these are non-denominational, according to the Hartford Institute for Religion Research. Evangelicalism wanted to open its doors to all believers and often lack roots in the traditions of particular congregations. Thus, many evangelical churches have a generic identity. This has changed the face of local church life.
