Los Angeles, CA—McKim Consulting, a leader in nonprofit sustainability solutions just released the report for their first annual Nonprofit Leadership Survey 2011. The survey was sent to over 1500 leaders in the greater Los Angeles nonprofit community and reveals trends that are significant to all involved.
The Nonprofit Leadership Survey reveals that nonprofits are currently challenged and will continue to be so in the foreseeable future.
“Looking closely at the results, this really is the proverbial ‘canary in the coalmine,’” says Robert McKim, CEO. “We already knew that there were many nonprofits that would be suffering in the wake of the economy. Just how badly and how severe the impact is likely to be in the year to come, well, even if we sort of knew, seeing it in black and white made it worse.”
Not surprising, agencies are experiencing increased need for their services and few expect to reduce their activities or to merge with similar organizations to ensure continued support for the community. This in the face of expected lower annual revenues.
“The fact that so many nonprofits are expecting that lost funds will be replaced by private donations is problematic,” says Annika Hylmo Ph. D., Partner and Director of Research and Development. “The pressures placed on private donations will not make up for lost funds and many smaller agencies and those without a plan may be forced out. The real losers would be the recipients of agency services when agencies are forced to close or reduce services because of poor planning and lack of funds.”
Most agencies are relying on limited sources for their funding, with more pressure expected on private donations over the next year. The high reliance on private donors means that more agencies will be attempting to seek funds from the same pool of money, which likely will challenge those without established relationships to a strong private donor base.
The survey also shows that while nonprofits have to increasingly rely on volunteers to deliver their services, few Executive Directors know how to effectively manage the cadre of people who donate their time. That could jeopardize volunteer relationships, services, and long-term donations.
The survey reveals that most boards lack education about their roles and responsibilities, which means that the boards are operating at a less than effective level and that they are not fully supporting the agencies that they purport to represent.
Taken as a whole, the report points to a nonprofit community where more agencies are at risk than would like to admit to it, and where immediate strategies need to be implemented to ensure continued support for the people who are in need of their services.
