This article was written to inform everyone about a growing problem around the country. The vast majority of our population is underinsured. Recent studies have shown that 3 in 4 households have very little or no insurance to cover their basic needs. For Example, most people only carry liability insurance on their vehicles and usually it’s the state minimum. If the average home burned down we would find that most homeowners do not have enough insurance to cover their personal belongings, or updates & modifications to their home. In addition, life insurance and disability insurance are also two under used products in many households. Let's use one of my clients for an example. We will call him John Doe. John is 38 years old he makes 65k per year his wife is a homemaker and does not work. John also has two children ages 2 and 5. He has $50,000 in group life insurance at work and told me that it’s not in the budget to buy any more insurance. This is the problem if John died tomorrow his wife and kids would get $50,000 that’s not even enough to cover 1 year of John’s salary. His wife and kids lives would be turned up side down. She would likely struggle to raise their kids. In addition if John were to become disabled his disability would only cover 60% of his salary (taxable). If John’s house were to burn down the coverage would only cover a small amount of their possessions. I am sure you get the picture now!
