For married couples-to-be, adding the option of charity donations to their gift registries is both popular and commendable. It does the community good, and offers a unique, more personal gift giving option to items such as silverware, or department store gift cards. The Nourishing Kitchen of NYC, Inc. is encouraging donations by way of wedding gift registries through the Nourishing Bride program. Brides-to-be become Nourishing Brides with any donation to the charity made specifically in honor of their wedding and by way of The Nourishing Bride webpage (eatwellnyc.org/nourishingbride.html). An idea inspired by the recent engagement the organization’s own Executive Director, Gina Puzzanghera and CEO, Scott Keatley.

Ms. Puzzanghera and Mr. Keatley became engaged in February 2010. Once congratulated, friends and family immediately asked them where they were registered, and what they would like for wedding gifts. “Honestly, we do not want gifts,” they told everyone, “we ask instead for donations to our organization, The Nourishing Kitchen of NYC. That would help us—and the community—the most.”

The Nourishing Bride program allows brides, grooms, and their wedding guests to give the gift of “nutrition for all." Ideal for those concerned with issues such as hunger, nutritional education, and urban poverty. The Nourishing Bride webpage lists ways in which the Nourishing Kitchen's programs and services will be helped through enrollment. Different levels and options of giving can be selected; donations either in honor of the bride and groom through shower and wedding gift registries, or in honor of wedding guests in the form of charitable party favors.

*The Nourishing Kitchen of NYC, Inc. is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) community food program in East Harlem, NY, which provides free well-balanced meals and nutritional education programs to anyone in need. In their certified Green Kitchen, the team works to serve up and distribute over 50 homemade lunches, 150 pounds of produce, and 50 pantry bags a week, to a community with numerous residents affected by poverty, hunger and nutritional education.
