Is your home in need of an upgrade? Need an extra space? With current home and construction prices at their lowest point in years, there has never been a better time to remodel or add a second bedroom to your home. If you bought your home several years ago you have probably lost some of the value in your property. But now home prices are on the rise in San Diego, for as little as $40,000 you can add a second bedroom, remodel your kitchen and bathrooms, add a garage or upgrade your finishes. Once home prices come back, so will construction costs. If you are looking to sell your San Diego home, before you do consider this. If your home is priced at $400,000, you could pay as much as $28,000 in real estate commission. You can do a lot to your San Diego home with that rate of investment. Don't take the hit on your home value now, think about the future. If you are looking to buy a home, look for one that needs repairs or is outdated and consider fixing it up. Once the housing market comes back you will have less invested in your home than most other buyers that bought in San Diego during the boom. Most buyers don't want a fixer upper. They think it is too much work, or an inconvenience. The fact of the matter is, its really not that difficult to do if you follow a few simple guidelines.
1. Do your research: Start online and find local companies that offer remodeling or construction services in San Diego. Make sure they are licensed and insured. You can check with the California Contractors Licence Board and the BBB to make sure they have all the credentials.
2. Always get three or more estimates: Never trust just one contractor, always get at least three quotes to ensure you are receiving a fair price.
3. Pick a budget and stick to it: Don't let your contractor up sell you. You know how much you can spend, stick to your guns! Most contractors will try and get you to spend more money with change orders and upgrades. Prioritize, put the money where your home needs it the most.
Most contractors are reliable and honest. But always protect yourself. Hire a professional for your San Diego remodel or construction project.
