http://www.nutritionfactsmaker.com Bill Even, web designer and owner of Nutrition Facts Maker, developed the concept for making custom nutrition panels when one of his web clients needed a nutrition label for marketing collateral. “When my client asked me to create a nutrition facts panel for one of their products, my first instinct was to find a blank template on the Internet. I was amazed to learn that such a product didn’t exist unless you wanted to spend significant dollars to have your food scientifically analyzed first,” Even said.
“Spending hundreds of dollars wasn’t an option, so the next alternative was to make my own. I downloaded the FDA’s guidelines and went to work. It then hit me that if I needed these labels, other people might need them too,” Even added.
Nutrition Facts Maker is an inexpensive subscription-based system. “Users have four subscription levels to choose from: one day, one week, one month, or one year. Pricing is affordable no matter what level you choose. If you only need one or two labels, a one day subscription at $16.95 is probably all you need. If you have a number of labels, one week at $21.95 is a better choice, giving you added flexibility for only a few dollars more.
“Monthly and annual subscriptions are available for $39.95 and $129.95 respectively. Longer subscriptions are mostly geared towards manufacturers or marketing firms that may need the ability to create a nutrition panel on a regular basis. Regardless of the price level you choose, there is no limit to the number of labels you can make during the subscription period—all you need is the data. Nutrition Facts Maker does not calculate the fat, calories, cholesterol, etc. It only makes the label from the values you enter,” Even said.
Nutrition Facts Maker output files work with the Adobe® Reader® on either PC or Mac environments. Labels created on the system can be saved on a hard drive or flash drive and used over and over, even after subscriptions have expired. All U.S. labels are designed to meet the specifications established by the FDA.
“The FDA has very specific guidelines with respect to the size and face of fonts, line spacing, the placement of information and the data actually included on the label. Nutrition Facts Maker labels are designed to meet those guidelines so as to be FDA compliant. Furthermore, they are all produced at 300 dots per inch so they can be easily used in printed materials,” Even said.
The system currently has 18 different nutrition label templates and counting to choose from. To keep the system updated, new labels are added as clients request them. In addition to the U.S. nutrition labels, there is a Canadian bilingual template available, as well as several USDA seals used in the packaging of meats. When using these seals, the meat processor is required to include their unique enterprise number on the label. “The Canadian labels and the USDA seals were logical extensions to the system. The U. S. and Canadian governments do not provide functional templates for the labels and seals, only the specifications on the size, appearance, and structure,” Even said.
NutritionFactsMaker.com offers links to important nutrition label-related resources and also includes a brief training video that shows interested visitors the ease and speed in which a label can be created. They also have a Facebook presence so fans of the site are alerted to new features as soon as they are added. Payments are processed through Paypal.
