NZ Firm May Hold Key To Delivering Pay-For Web TV

(Free-Press-Release.com) February 15, 2010 -- CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand - Major internet players Microsoft, TiVo, Google, Apple, News Corporation and others are in an uproar about how convergence of TV and the internet will be delivered and how to charge for content. There are issues, law suits and lots of grumbling around set top box standards, web-crawlers cashing news stories and usability of web TV. President Obama and FCC regulators are keen to legislate that internet content must be available on the home TV. The standards battle for web TV is heating up and pageQ is well positioned.

Enter pageQ, a browser with a player toolbar (play, pause, stop, ff, rewind). The toolbar also has a ‘camera icon’ to capture pages into a ‘Q® sequence’ or playlist of web pages- like iTunes, but for web pages. PageQ Browser allows users to create Qs of web content and any page, any format (video, music, image, flash, web page…) encountered on the internet can be captured into a Q.

PageQ Browser can be driven by the controls on a TV remote (play, pause, stop, ff, rewind) to play web content in a Q. There is also a timer function which facilitates programming web content. QSearch is a search engine that returns a list of Qs based on your search query. Select a Q from the results page and view it in your default browser or on your TV – no software install necessary. Qs found on QNet can be ‘open’ for wiki type contribution or password protected in public or private groups. Comments and rating of Qs are provided.

Qs may well also be the answer to web pay-for-content. PageQ software designer Wayne Parker describes how this could work. “Let’s say a Newspaper creates a public or private Q that requires payment. The newspaper updates the pages each day, so whenever a subscriber references the same Q (on computer or TV via set top box), they see the new content.” A model along the lines of 99c iTunes subscription per Q where ‘lots pay almost nothing versus a few paying a lot’ suits content providers and users.

John Blennerhassett believes – “The internet is becoming increasingly bloated. Traditional search engines provide mixed results with their algorithms and robots. PageQ takes it to another level - web search results filtered by human beings. Kindred spirits sharing their favourite sites.”
