It is one of the interesting and the most challenging encounters between South Africa and New Zealand when they meet for the third quarter final match of the World Cup 2011. The match will be held at Shere Bangla National Stadium on March 25, Friday, in Mirpur. South Africa is going great guns in this World Cup and has lost only one of their group matches against England. The Proteas are oozing with confidence and they are one of the top favorites of ICC World Cup 2011. The South Africans started on a confident note with a seven-wicket victory against West Indies. They marched ahead triumphantly and were able to snatch wins from all of its opponents of Group B, except England. Strauss’s team which had been quite shaky and at times unpredictable in this big tournament, dramatically defeated South Africa by six runs in a low scoring match.
South Africa is touted to be quite nonchalant and is not paying much heed to their opponent, New Zealand, in the quarter finals. The Proteas are focusing on the match and are all set to give their best so that they can cruise to the semi-finals with a win. The knock-out stage is unnerving and predictions can go haywire. The black caps have exhibited an average performance in this grand tournament. New Zealand is not in the best of their forms, but on a big match, the team has the potential to turn things in their favor.
Ross Taylor of the Kiwis can be a monster for the opponent team when he starts blistering with the bat, as was the scenario in the match against Pakistan, where he remained unbeaten at 131. Brendon McCullum, Scott Styris are capable of breezy batting as well. New Zealand is depending on their skipper, the class-apart spinner, Daniel Vettori and their pace bowler Kyle Millis. Both the players had to face some injury problems, but are expected to be fit for Friday and deliver their best on the crucial match.
The Kiwis has struggled but their bowling coach, Allan Donald, the former South African pace bowler has put in efforts to make the bowling attack of the Kiwis to fire on the important day. If we glance through the records, it is the Kiwis that successfully defeated South Africa in 2003 and 2007 World Cup respectively. 2011 World Cup can witness history repeating itself in Mirpur on March 25.
South Africa had a great chance of winning the World Cup in 1999, but they were eliminated in the semi-finals after a dramatic tie with the Aussies. They failed to cash in the opportunity, but 2011 can prove to be a fortunate year for the Proteas to bag their first World Cup. With Villiers and Amla in good touch, the Proteas also need Kallis and Smith to perform with the bat. South Africa has a commendable spin bowling attack and can rely on Botha, Peterson and Imran Tahir. Robin Peterson is the third highest wicket-taker in the tournament, having 14 wickets in his kitty. Their pace bowling attack has got a good variety with Dale Steyn capable of weaving magic with the ball.
