A grassroots movement to overturn the 23 year ban and slaughter of family dogs in Denver, CO.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Denver,
Colorado,
United States of America
(Free-Press-Release.com) January 25, 2012 --
Since 1989, the city of Denver, Co has banned Pit Bulls or any dog having the majority of characteristics of a Pit Bull (and MANY misidentified breeds). This ordinance came to be as a knee jerk reaction to the death of a small boy and the mauling of a priest.
Since 1989, the city of Denver has taken many hits over their local law. Multiple class action lawsuits, multiple litigations involving the destruction of dogs not falling under the ban, the city had a near brush with a federal lawsuit involving the Americans with Disabilities Act and the US Department of Justice over confiscating Service Dogs from US Veterans and Disabled persons. According to Denver's "Home Rule Authority", the ban is constitutional under their local jurisdiction. In the rest of the United States, confiscating and destroying property (in this case, family dogs) is a clear cut violation of both the 4th and 14th amendments. Note, the state of Colorado banned the use of Breed Specific Legislation in 2004. Denver's Home Rule supersedes state authority.
Keep in mind, the city of Denver only has skewed and manipulated statistical data from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, circa 1972 to support their ban, the city has no credible expert opinion that supports their ordinance, and every major animal welfare organization globally denounces the use of breed specific bans and/or restriction as a means to enforcing public safety.
Since 1989, many groups and organization have attempted to take on Denver's Pit Bull ban. The one obstacle that shuts down these efforts is Denver's strong hold of their Home Rule. The OccuPIT Denver platform is designed to take awareness and the support for change out of Denver and onto the global stage. Starting with a 10,000 signature petition that is gaining support and awareness from as far away as Europe, Australia, South and Central America, etc... The results of the petition will be circulated to every major news source (print and televised) in the U.S. It is the intention of the campaign to hit Denver where it will do the most damage: to deter tourism, commerce, potential home buyers and small business owners, travel through Denver International Airport, and so on.
