Ockbrook Girls Hit Right Note at National Youth Choir

February 2, 2011

Out of thousands of entrants, three pupils at a leading Derbyshire independent school have consistently hit the right notes in auditions for the prestigious National Youth Choirs of Great Britain.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) February 2, 2011 -- Emily Cox, aged 14, is the latest Ockbrook pupil to receive her invitation to join one of the most highly regarded and inspirational youth music organisations in the world. Emily joins 16 year old Laura Chapman and 12 year old Farren Turner, making Ockbrook School the only school in the Midlands to have three representatives in the National Youth Choir.

Emily enthuses: “This is a dream come true for me. I’m very excited at this wonderful opportunity and it’s lovely to know that I am joining two friendly faces from school! We’re all really looking forward to our first concert which takes place in April at the amazing Symphony Hall in Birmingham.”

Greg Maskalick, Director of Music at Ockbrook School, says: “The whole school is immensely proud of the achievement of these three girls. I am personally delighted for each of them and I believe their individual achievements speak volumes about the very high quality of the choral programme that we enjoy at the school.”

This year almost 800 talented young people, between the ages of 9 and 22, will enjoy the benefits of the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain experience by taking part in a programme of residential courses and concerts. Courses include intensive rehearsals, individual voice coaching and lessons in musicianship: a combination that encourages the development of both teamwork and leadership skills. Course staff members are experts in the field of choral training and specific vocal workshops are provided by guest specialists.

The school’s musical excellence has also been recognised at county level. Sophie Kimmitt, Year 11, plays flute and has been successful in her audition for Derbyshire County Youth Wind Band. Catherine Johnston, Year 11, plays trumpet and is in the Derbyshire County Youth Wind Band and County Youth Orchestra.

Ockbrook School is located between Nottingham and Derby, just off the A52. Ockbrook School is an independent school for girls aged 2-18 years and boys aged 2-11 years. For further details visit our website www.ockbrook.derby.sch.uk
