FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Steubenville, Ohio, United States of America (Free-Press-Release.com) December 4, 2010 -- According to Ohio Department of Insurance, the recent changes will help more than 100,000 Ohioans get health insurance access over the next three years. With new health care reform, Ohio health insurance plans have widened coverage for individuals, families and businesses.

Standard Ohio Health Insurance Plans

Ohio health insurance companies offer the following standard health insurance options:

• HMO (Health Maintenance Organization) plans are affordable health plans that work through a network of doctors, hospitals, clinics, specialists, and other care providers.
• PPO (Preferred Provider Organization) plans also provide members coverage through a health care provider network, but are more flexible as they offer with the advantage of coverage with any health care provider.
• FOS (Fee for Service) plans do not work under provider networks. Members see a doctor of their choice and the plan pays, though premiums and deductible are higher than other types of health coverage.

• POS (Point of Service) health plans combine features of a HMO and PPO. They offer primary care through a network physician, but also allow members to consult an out-of-network provider at a higher cost.

Ohio Health Insurance and Health Reform

Some of the important changes in Ohio health insurance plans following recent health care reform include:

• Insurers are limited in the amount they can charge people with pre-existing or chronic conditions who buy individual health policies through open enrollment since January 1, 2010
• Unmarried adult children can stay in their parents’ health plan up to age 28
• Health insurance plans cannot exclude children with pre-existing conditions from coverage under their family health care plan

• Under Section 125 (Cafeteria) Plans, all employers with 10 or more employees must adopt and maintain a cafeteria plan that allows the employees to pay for health insurance coverage through a salary reduction arrangement as permitted under revenue laws
• Coverage under the Ohio mini-COBRA law will be extended from 6 to 12 months so that employees of small businesses (less than 20 employees) who lose their jobs can continue health insurance coverage at their own cost.
