The Sixth Annual Other Venice Film Festival
Maverick Spotlight Award
The Other Venice Film Festival is extraordinarily honored to be presenting Mr. Oliver Stone with our prestigious Maverick Spotlight Award. The Maverick Spotlight Award is presented to a filmmaker who resides in or has directed a film in the coastal community of Venice Beach. Past recipients of the this award have been given to Catherine Hardwicke, Roger Corman, Werner Herzog, Tony Bill and Stacy Peralta.
Never in the history of American cinema has there been a film director who has made as significant a contribution to the social and political landscape as Mr. Oliver Stone. As an Oscar Award© winning filmmaker, Stone has directed such feature films as “Talk Radio”, "Platoon", "J.F.K.", “Wall Street”, "Born on the Fourth of July", “Heaven and Earth”, "Nixon", "Natural Born Killers", "U-Turn", “Any Given Sunday”, “Alexander”, “World Trade Center” and most recently, "W." In addition, the Other Venice Film Festival believes that Stone’s films embody the fiercely creative, independent-spirit of Venice Beach, California.
On Friday, October 16, The Other Venice Film Festival will honor Stone with an Eighteenth-Annual Anniversary Screening of his feature film "The Doors", a visually hypnotic and deeply personal journey into the life of the legendary singer Jim Morrison. From his humble beginnings on the Venice Beach Boardwalk to his uncontrollable rise to 1960s rock stardom, Morrison was both an enigmatic pop icon and a self-destructive madman.
