September 4th 2011, Crans Montana, Switzerland: Thomas Bjorn of Denmark completed a remarkable back-to-back victory at the Omega European Masters with a scintillating nine-under-par 62 on Sunday.
Bjorn, who won in Scotland last week, defeated a flu-stricken Martin Kaymer of Germany by four shots with his winning total of 20-under-par 264 in the €2 million (approximately US$2.6 million) showpiece co sanctioned by the Asian Tour and European Tour.
Kaymer posted a flawless round of 65 highlighted by two eagles and two birdies while overnight leader Jamie Donaldson (70) of Wales, Rory McIlroy (68) of Northern Ireland and Jaco Van Zyl (64) of South Africa signed off in tied third.
World number two Lee Westwood of England settled for joint sixth place, six strokes from the champion Bjorn and Siddikur of Bangladesh was the best placed Asian in tied 18th place at the Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club.
“The way I finished was special and it's been an amazing two weeks. I started hitting my wedges so well last week and kept it going,” said the 40-year-old, who claimed his third European Tour title this year.
Bjorn, who was three shots off the lead at the start of the day, turned in 32 highlighted by four consecutive birdies from the fifth hole. He birdied 10 and dropped his second shot of the day on 12 before cruising with three more birdies and one eagle.
“At the end you think nothing can go wrong. Golf seems easy sometimes and you have to remember that when you are not playing well,” said Bjorn, who won US$477,578.
World number five Kaymer, winner of the 2010 US PGA Tour Championship, was six under after eight holes but failed to make a charge as he parred the next 10 holes.
“I was feeling sick and it was difficult but after that start, I was fired up and wanted to win. It is not great to have a flu. Every time you picked up the ball I felt the pressure in my forehead but it is not an excuse for anything,” said Kaymer, playing in his first tournament in two weeks.
Siddikur closed with a final round 67 to finish as the top Asian despite bogeying the last hole.
He started from the 10th tee and played in unfamiliar conditions on Sunday as rain and fog covered the Crans-sur-Sierre but it did not deter him from returning with six birdies against two bogeys.
“The weather was very uncertain. It was raining in the beginning then it was cold and then there was fog! We had to wait on the second last hole for the fog to clear.
“I’m playing with a lot of confidence and this result will set me up perfectly in the second half of the year,” said Siddikur, currently second on the Asian Tour Order of Merit.
