Troy, Mich., September 28, 2011 — Starting as a mom-and-pop Professional Employer Organization (PEO) in 1999, Craig Sherman and Maria Silamianos have grown their family Human Resources business into a $100-million enterprise, serving clients and 25,000 co-employees in every state and internationally in Canada, Guam, Mexico, and Puerto Rico. This month they’re officially opening Omega Solutions’ presence beyond their Shelby Township roots and operations center with a new corporate headquarters just inside the front doors of the Top of Troy building on Big Beaver Road at I-75.
According to the National Association of Professional Employer Organizations, between 2–3 million American workers are employed in PEO arrangements and the industry is enjoying an annual growth rate of nearly 20%. Driving this growth is the time burden that small business owners endure in order to handle employee-related paperwork — a time commitment the U.S. Small Business Administration estimates to be 7-25% of each owners’ work hours.
“Growing businesses have increasingly turned to PEOs to take on their Human Resources responsibilities including payroll and the time-consuming tasks of dealing with often confusing employment laws, regulations, and compliance requirements,” said Sherman, Omega Solutions’ CEO. “Not only do we provide professional HR services and cost savings, but in today’s economy, we are helping businesses survive by freeing owners to devote more time and attention to making their operations more efficient, foster greater employee satisfaction, and keep revenues coming in. We help them get their focus back to the things they went into business to do.”
Hands-on dedication to their business was rewarded with steady growth but a breakthrough opportunity came in 2006 when Omega Solutions won a contract with a merchandising service company that supported the initial start-up of big-box stores across the country. “That meant we had to be licensed in every state and understand different employment laws in each one,” said Sherman. “It gave us the platform to become a national company and, from here, our business just catapulted. With more employees under contract we gained greater buying power and were able to offer our clients and our employees better health insurance and benefits, like 401(k) plans, often at lower costs. That’s become even more important during in this business cycle as employers battle tight labor markets.”
The company is now the second-largest PEO in Michigan and ranks in the middle tier of its competitors nationwide. It is also attracting other mom-and-pop PEOs to the Omega family including the acquisition of a Clarkston firm last year, which became the impetus to provide staffing and office space closer to its expanded base of local clients in Oakland County.
The Omega Solutions dynamic duo balances a daunting schedule as they share management responsibilities, travel to meet with clients around the country, and chauffeur two sons between home, school, and activities while also taking on community leadership roles. They are involved volunteers with several charitable organizations and are active supporters of local political campaigns. The company is a member of Automation Alley and the Troy Chamber of Commerce and Silamianos is the vice chair of the Macomb County Chamber board of directors.
“I was born and raised in Oakland County,” Sherman explains, “but when I came to Macomb County and saw the people and the community, I understood that this area was getting a bum rap.
