Reiser Relief Inc President Ann Brau reports from Haiti: Today is the third anniversary of the earthquake in Haiti; we join together with groups from world to remember the tragic events of that fateful day and to respond in a faith-filled way.
A 7.0-magnitude earthquake on January 12, 2010, which decimated the country's already decaying infrastructure. About 230,000 people died, and nearly 2 million Haitians were displaced.
Haiti and its people still very much need our prayers and we invite you and your group to pray for recovery in Haiti a country in healing.
Though Haiti has had many severe challenges to overcome: flooding, earthquake, and political unrest, Haitians remain strong and deeply rooted in their faith.
With your help Reiser Relief can continue to provide essential services to many Haitian families in their day-to-day efforts for survival. These services include providing fresh water, stocking food centers, funding education and goal in 2013 is to fund a building of a home for the forgotten elderly. We strive to meet as many practical needs as possible in this struggling country.
The smell of poverty still hangs heavy, children still run dirty and naked in the streets, babies and children with unattended medical disabilities are seen everywhere, dirty shacks, no toilets or sanitation systems, no running water, children walking shoeless on raw sewage and glass, and no garbage pickup are still the norm. And yet, as we stood in the most poverty stricken part of Port au Prince, I am happy to be here, happy to be holding babies, carrying water, moving water buckets, and taking photos of all the smiling children.
Haiti IS a difficult country to understand. It IS a difficult country to walk away from after each visit without a sense of guilt. And it IS a country God holds gently in his arms.
Maybe I never will totally understand the reason for HIS plan, and why he gave me a role in it. But I do know there is a reason I have been called to Haiti, and I will go forth continuing to my best to answer that call.
One of our goals is to keep Father Reiser's legacy alive by continuing to fund his projects in Haiti and be involved in helping to fund additional much-needed projects in Haiti as Father would have done.
