With the current difficult economic times weighing heavily on Michigan State University, there are still plenty of reasons to be proud to be a Spartan.

EAST LANSING, Mich. (Nov. 14, 2009)—Provost Wilcox wrote a message to the Michigan State University community yesterday addressing the reshaping of MSU during these current difficult economic times. He said the focus of the message was to address “adjustments in operations and functions, policies and practices, services to students, academic offerings and organization, as well as additional efficiencies.” As MSU students and faculty read Provost Wilcox’s message, they might be discouraged by the cutting of programs, reorganization of departments, and the impact these changes could have on the university. However, Michigan State University has faced difficult times before, and has triumphed over many difficulties. Now, in a time of hardship for the university, might be a good time to look at the many benefits that MSU continues to offer both students and faculty.
Michigan State offers a campus that few others can compete with. While the size might seem like a struggle in the winter, its beauty can not be overlooked. Erin Contance, an MSU alumnus states, “I love the campus. It is sprawling and easy to navigate once you get use to the size. There are many beautiful sights on campus.”
Another advantage of being a Spartan is the school spirit and sense of pride that comes with the title. Much of this school spirit is captured by the school mascot, Sparty. Sparty turned 20 in October of this year. Sparty is a mascot recognized throughout the country. In 2004, Sparty won the Best Mascot National Championship at the Universal Cheer Association College Nationals, becoming the first Big Ten Conference mascot to do so. He won Best Mascot for the second year in a row after securing the honor again the following year.
“Once you’re a Spartan, you’re always a Spartan.” It’s a quote MSU students hear over and over again during their years at MSU. This advantage might be the greatest of being a Spartan. MSU alumni are everywhere, holding positions in nearly every field. Alumni can help students find internships while in school, or even find jobs after graduation. The MSU community does not exist only in East Lansing; it is a world wide community.
