How Kyokushinkai Started

Kyokushinkai was founded by Master Mas Oyama, who studied several forms of martial arts and finally produced his own karate style. It had been designed to be a stand-up full contact form of karate, utilising strong might and an effective fighting technique. The motto of kyokushinkai is “One shot, one victory”. It emphasises self-improvement, intense preparation and perhaps discipline. There are over twelve million practitioners of this kind of karate ever since it had been formed.

Kyokushinkai began in 1964 after Oyama spent years training and refining his own technique. Oyama grew up in China where he first educated Shaolin strategies. He moved to Japan in 1938 and studied Okinawan Karate, at last reaching 2nd Dan with this form. Shortly, after World War II he taught in Goju Ryu Karate, and attained 8th Dan. Oyama also took up other forms of martial arts, including judo which is where he achieved a 4th Dan. After this time, Oyama retreated towards the mountains for solitary working out. After Oyama died in 1994, there is various separation among the various Kyokushinkai communities. The primary grounds for this were conflicts between those folks that thought they should come after Oyama, as Oyama named no successor before his death. Each of the fall apart groups of Kyokushinkai claim to act for the original organisation, but one can find variations between many of those organisations and the original founded by Oyama.
